Tendinitis is the inflammation, irritation, and swelling of a tendon. Tendons connect muscle to bone. Typically from overuse or repetitive motions, the tendon grows red and swollen. Tendinitis can also be caused by a sudden injury, though not as common as overuse. Common tendinitis sites include your shoulders, elbows and wrists.
Symptoms include pain and tenderness along the tendon (usually near a joint), pain at night, or pain that is worse with movement or activity. The goal of treatment is to relieve pain and reduce inflammation. Treatment may include resting the affected area, icing the area, various medicines and injections as well as physical therapy and strengthening exercises. All of these aim to reduce pain and inflammation. However, if these treatments don’t relieve the symptoms, other treatments may be necessary. Your doctor may suggest surgery, if the tendon is severely damaged.
